When an Artwork is reduced to its smallest components we can see that art can be created only using these seven elements. An artwork can be created by using a solitary element. More commonly artworks are created using more than one element.

Your child's first classes with Mr. Huff
We will begin by learning and reviewing the elements of art. I like to work in the following order: Line, Shape, Color, Value, Space, Texture then Form. We will begin by drawing lines of many types, Straight lines, Wavy lines, Dot/Dash/Broken lines, Zig Zag lines, Diagonal, Horizontal and Vertical lines. We will use rulers and other tools to help us create our lines. We will use pencil, colored pencil, paper and scissors, rulers and glue when we are learning about lines.
After we have learned about lines, we can move on to shapes. We will create organic or natural shapes and geometric shapes. We will compare and contrast geometric and organic/natural shapes. We will draw shapes using tools such as rulers, stencils, compass, pencils, markers scissors, paper and glue. We will learn how to combine shapes to create new shapes. We will use shapes and lines, colors and various values to create a space or setting and to tell a story.
Next we will learn to mix colors using the color wheel which was developed by Sir Issac Newton. We will learn about Primary , Secondary and Tertiary or intermediate colors. The primaries are Red, Yellow and Blue. The secondaries are Orange, Green and Violet and the tertiary or intermediate colors are the two name colors like Red violet, Blue Violet, Yellow Orange, Red Orange, Blue Green and Yellow Green. We will work with crayons, markers, colored pencils and watercolors. We will blend some colors and watch them make new colors. We will also make tints by adding white or more water to watercolors and shades by adding black to colors.
Then we will explore ways to create a variety of values like cross hatching and hatch lines, stippling, blending, or adding white or black to a color. I like to cover contour lines when I teach value because I think contour lines lead nicely into cross hatching.
Finally form is explored through paper sculpture and sometimes assemblage mixed media and relief sculpture. Sculpture is my favorite thing to teach, so this is what I look forward to the most. When we learn about form, we will be using paper, glue, scissors, assorted dimensional objects such as pipe cleaners, paper tubes, structural paper, and maybe some surprises too!
I look forward to teaching new students about the elements of art!
